“Disruptive pupil behaviour is a frustration for many teachers. In fact, 70% of teachers told us they had considered quitting the profession over poor behaviour”
— TEACHER SUPPORT NETWORK AND FAMILY LIVES BEHAVIOUR SURVEY 2010
Interacting with individuals who display distress through problem behaviour has an emotional toll on all educators. Embedding a comprehensive system to assist staff with this is a core feature of the inset day. All staff will learn how to implement this system by themselves and for themselves. This adds a structure for staff that they can utilise before relying on their senior hierarchy.
Sometimes a cycle can develop between the teacher and the students that only makes things worse: the pupils misbehave more, you dislike them more, you are less positive and friendly, they dislike you and your classes more, they disrupt more and so it goes on. The cycle needs to be broken. This is illustrated by the Betari Box:
If you have specific areas that you would like to be covered the workshop has developed as adaptable and can be made to be bespoke to your needs. Please discuss with us any elements you would like added to the day.
“Study of over 100 reports on classroom management, including 134 experiments designed to find the most successful classroom strategies as well as finding that pupils prefer the dominant-cooperative style mix twice as much as the purely cooperative style or indeed any other style”
— ROBERT MARZANO’S (2003)
This course was invaluable and just what we needed to raise morale and self-esteem at such a difficult, critical time in 2020.
The course was deemed ‘enlightening, thought provoking and a tonic’ and reinforced a team building approach. Staff felt it was an ‘eye opener’ to witness how other staff were feeling when they were feeding back anonymously about their feelings, emotions and experiences and felt that they were not alone.
Staff took time to focus on their positive and supportive reactions to pupils and staff who were in distress or needed support and assistance and will apply these strategies to themselves. A very positive camaraderie and renewed team building approach has resulted from this course.
We have worked with Des on other sessions and projects and he never fails to enthuse, engage, challenge and support staff. Thanks so much, an excellent experience again.
Your thought process changes after the workshop. Very helpful
Interesting, informative, relevant and inspiring.
It was very interesting and was good to catch up/recap on somethings. very useful
Loved the course, kept waiting for you to shout , look forward to seeing you in person again.
It was really good to get an understanding of the effect of reinforcement (positive and negative) and the impact of immediate against future.
Interesting and beneficial as a reminder and reinforcer. I was able to relate the strategies to my work and some to home. I take from the course different ideas and a continually changing and developing mindset.
I felt the workshop was interesting and built on the experiences of previous training. The content revisiting Attachment theory was particularly useful to me as I have just started working with a very vulnerable young pupil for whom perception regarding acceptance and rejection is particularly difficult.
Lots of information given today and I found it very interesting, especially the parts about the advisor. That will help me in my own personal experiences in future as well as passing it on to others I work with.
This was a fascinating course. The presentation was very engaging, I liked the anonymous answers we could provide through menti. It supported me to contribute. The ideas and concepts presented will support me personally and the students and staff I work with. Thank you Des.
Some really helpful content, Putting on the break, naming your inner voice, positive and negative reinforcement clarified. A really interesting day- Where were you when I had my nervous breakdown? It would be good to learn this stuff academically rather than by bitter experience. This should be standard teaching on a PGCE .
very good presentation and information. I learned a lot that I didn't know before.
always inspiring and beneficial to me
Fantastic course, very interesting and well presented. Excellent strategies to use in the workplace for children and staff
The pro social Ebola was very inspiring. Some good reading about how we react and finding a tool that works even though you may need to adapt that tool. Building upon relationships and developing positive ones.
Excellent course, really informative and thought provoking...
Another really valuable training course to put to good use both in a work environment and personally. Brilliantly delivered, as always. Reminded me that we all have the ability to create a better environment, mentally and emotionally for ourselves and others. Des gives us the tools in which to achieve that. It's a gentle, caring approach with huge impact. Always leave feeling much better equipped to cope with the vast array of situations we can all find ourselves in.
Excellent course, very privileged to be able to experience this.
Des is a great teacher. I always find his courses really useful and the information/ theories he gives are very beneficial and are really helpful, both personally and in the workplace.
Really enjoyed the course as always.
Very interesting, looking forward to when we can do hands on training
